After nearly eight years of being a Google+ user, the time to say goodbye to the social network is almost here. For those of you that never saw the value of Google+ user, I don't expect you to fully understand what the hardcore users (I'm one of them) will be missing when the platform is no more. I think Mike Elgan's article probably describes Google+ best when he explains it as a place "where smart people gather for long, detailed and interesting conversations" without the streams being "algorithmically filtered" like most social networks.

Cord-Cutting: Trying out YouTube TV

Cord-Cutting: Trying out YouTube TV Screenshot of my view of YouTube TV Bryan Ruby Sat, 01/05/2019 - 10:12

Trying out YouTube TV for the first time. I'm a current DirecTV Now subscriber and have used SlingTV in the past.

Technically, YouTube TV isn't being offered for my area so I used the zip code of another location I visit often. For my area, local channels aren't currently available via YouTube TV but I'm OK with that since for the past few years we've been getting our local channels through an antenna and utilizing a TiVO for our DVR. I estimate that we've saved around $2,000 in the past three years by not subscribing to Cable or Satellite TV with this arrangement.

Putting "Me" First in 2019 Bryan Ruby Wed, 01/02/2019 - 17:12

Following the footsteps of people bigger than me, like Mike Elgen and Dries Buytaert, I've decided to focus this year on my personal blog and spend less time on my other websites and social media networks. This has been a long time coming but probably the straw that broke the camel's back was Google's decision to shutdown my favorite social network, Google+

Our Dog Jasmine Bryan Ruby Sat, 12/01/2018 - 08:49

I'm not that big of a fan of people calling pets "their children". Yet, here I am reluctantly admitting that our Miniature Australian Shepherd has become part of the family since she entered our home in early 2016. By my estimation Jasmine has already traveled across six different states with us as she has accompanied us on family vacations and family visits. She's still a "teenager" and like most teens even has her own Instagram account. I'm not joking, her account is jasmine_the_mini_aussie.

The below video of Jasmine was produced automatically via Google Photos.

My first battery-powered snow blower was a Snow Joe Two-Stage

1 month 2 weeks ago
This winter I’ll be relying on my newly purchased EGO Power+ Snow Blower to clear the snow off the driveway. However, this EGO snow blower isn’t my first battery-powered snow blower but instead I once owned Snow Joe’s first Two-Stage 80V Cordless Snow Blower, the iON24SB-XR. As far as I know, Snow Joe is the only … Continue reading My first battery-powered snow blower was a Snow Joe Two-Stage

Car and Driver: Jaguar Is Reportedly Considering Going Fully Electric

Jaguar could drop all of its gasoline-powered models and become a fully electric luxury brand in the near future, if a report from the U.K.’s Autocar is to be believed. Jaguar has already stated publicly that all new models it launches starting in 2020 will offer some sort of hybrid power train, but a move to sell exclusively … Continue reading Car and Driver: Jaguar Is Reportedly Considering Going Fully Electric

Given my continuous obsession with the EGO Power+ product line, I couldn't resist buying this new product by EGO. The new EGO Power+ Nexus Power Inverter just arrived at my doorstep. This new 150 Watt Inverter should be a nice convenient addition for whenever I need need backup power indoors to run my smaller devices.

All of EGO's current line of 56 Volt Batteries will work with the Nexus. The power inverter provides two USB ports and one AC port. While 150 Watts isn't a huge amount of power it's enough to power a tablet and laptop while out and about, lamps in the house, and even your TV and router in a power outage. While run time will vary, there are a number of reviews showing people powering their television for a few hours off  a single 5.0 Ah or 7.5 Ah EGO battery.

CleanTechnica: Time to ditch that gas-powered weed eater for a battery-powered one?

3 months 2 weeks ago
The big news in the battery-powered garden tools sector may be the advancing tech that allows for higher voltage tools. Battery voltage for weed eaters seems to be going to infinity and beyond. The weed eater that won my informal whack-a-thon was an 80 volt machine. 80 volt weed eaters break new ground in the … Continue reading CleanTechnica: Time to ditch that gas-powered weed eater for a battery-powered one?
