Foswiki 1.1.4 under the Chirstmas tree

A reader of CMS Report asked me to give the latest version of Foswiki some love and attention to this open source "enterprise wiki" with an article. Not a problem as this is why I'm here!

Eight months in the making, Foswiki 1.1.4 comes with some new features and more than 160 crunched bugs relative to the previous release. Here are some highlights of new features and enhancements included in this package:

Happy Birthday Tiki.... our present is a shiny new beta!

Nine years ago this month marks the initial release of the Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware project. Known then as TikiWiki, the initial release (version 0.9) included a mere fraction of the features available today. Since 2002, the Tiki Community has become one of the largest open-source teams in the world and is in the top 2% of all projects on Ohloh.

About Tiki

Tiki 7 Released, the latest from Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware

The next major release of Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware is now available -- Tiki 7. In addition to more than 200 miscellaneous fixes and code improvements, Tiki 7 boasts several eagerly awaited new features:

  • Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware Drag-and-drop of modules
  • Dozens of new plugins including Blip.tv, Vimeo, TokenAccess
  • Introduction of the Theme Generator
  • A new unified search infrastructure, based on Zend Lucene
  • Integration with OpenStreetMap and Zotero
  • Revamped Slideshow
  • Mobile, using jQuery.mobile

With this release, Tiki has made some important technological changes, too. Tiki 7 marks the beginning of movement towards HTML5 and the end of support for Internet Explorer 6. Integration with jQuery Mobile is also featured in this release, replacing HAWHAW (first introduced in 2004) for mobile support.

The code for Tiki Trackers have been completely revamped in this release. This will allow developers to more easily improve the feature and better integrate it within all aspects of Tiki.

The release of Tiki 7 also means that Tiki 6 become the LTS (Long Term Support) version and that development on Tiki 3.x officially ends. Although Tiki 7 is available immediately for early adopters, many site administrators may elect to wait until 7.1. See https://dev.tiki.org/Version+lifecycle to determine which Tiki version is right for you.

About Tiki

Foswiki 1.1.3 has been released

I received an email earlier today introducing me to Foswiki. This free and open source wiki is a fork that began in late 2008 of another wiki you may know by the name of TWiki. Foswiki is positioning itself as the ideal collaboration tool for your project , team or business.

The sender of the email also wanted me to bring attention on the fact that Foswiki 1.1.3 has been released recently. Foswiki 1.1.3 is a release that adds more than 150 bug fixes and improvements making it better than the already stable 1.1.2. Upgrade package is available for upgrading from any earlier 1.1.X version to 1.1.2.

Some of the improvements in this version of Foswiki include:

  • Facelift of the history user interface
  • Update to the Wysiwyg editor TinyMCE to 3.3.9.3 and further improvements of the Wysiwyg editor has been made
  • Improvement of the UI for managing webs
  • Default jQuery is now 1.4.3. JQueryPlugin’s form plugin form is upgraded to 2.49 and jquery-ui is upgraded to 1.8
  • Fixes in the access controls for renaming attachments

Interactive Multiligual: Crowdsourcing translations with Tiki

Many times, software internationalization (often abbreviated as i18n) and translation can quickly become a nightmare... if you don't have the right tools. Tiki's interactive translation feature allows contributors to create, edit, and maintain the more than 40 translations of Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware.

In true "dog-fooding" tradition, the Tiki Community began crowd-sourcing this feature in 2010 by establishing a dedicated Tiki instance for translators. Not only can contributors translate via their browser, but Tiki's interactive translation feature allows textual translations within context. The centralized translation server, running the latest Tiki code, ensures that all translators are using the same version. The translation strings are regularly committed to the Tiki SVN repository.

Due to its ease of use, the Tiki Community recently completed two translation sprints, pushing the German and French languages towards 100% completion. With more than 45 active translator accounts, other languages are not far behind.
